Behind the scenes of a Burberry social project with Jasmine Tookes, mixing digital and film formats

Burberry × Jasmine Tookes

My good friend Sam, also the director, hit me up for this fun little social project with Burberry and Jasmine Tookes. He wanted to shoot both film and digital.

Equipment Choices

To keep things small and nimble while walking around a ranch, we decided to shoot digitally with the Sony FX3 paired with a Sony 24-70mm G-Master f/2.8, alongside a Super 8mm Canon 1014 XL-S.

The Canon features a beautiful 6.5-65mm f/1.4 lens and an impressive macro mode. We shot on Pro8-03 stock—Kodak 50D, a low-speed daylight film with amazing dynamic range—and had it processed at Pro8mm in Burbank, CA.

The Magic of Mixed Formats

There’s something really cool about mixing formats—Sam and I were geeking out over the film footage as soon as we got the scans back. The color, the texture, the unpredictability—it’s the kind of thing that makes shooting film exciting.

These two cameras allowed us to run around and shoot using only available light, with the occasional use of a bounce.

Lessons from Film

Shooting film on fast-paced projects like this always forces me to be more intentional with framing and exposure. That shift in mindset is something I try to carry into all my work.
